It has always been an interest of Brunei Darussalam, under the purveyance of the Ministry of Development, to promote and support local professionals to ensure the best level of quality is achieved for the country's future developments.
To date, 9 out of 41 (22%) local architects has successfully been registered as ASEAN Architects while 11 out of 38 (28%) local Professional Engineers has been successfully registered as ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers.
These applications as ASEAN Architects and Professional Engineers has been assessed by the Brunei Darussalam Monitoring Committees under BAPEQS as the Professional Regulating Authority and has made the recommendation to be endorsed by the ASEAN Architectural Council and ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers Council. The assessment deemed the application to be in compliance with the criteria in the Mutual Recognition Agreement on Architectural and Professional Engineering Services.
The benefits of being registered as an ASEAN professional under the MRA are as follows:
- An MRA is essential in the mobility of architects, professional engineers (and in the future surveying) and for the free flow of Architects, Professional Engineers and Surveying services within ASEAN. This would allow Bruneian architects, professional engineers and surveyors to be able to practice in ASEAN - in line with the domestic regulations of the ASEAN country.
- The development of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Mutual Recognition of engineers, architects and surveying Qualification is essential to:
- Ensure the standardization of requirements of information and documentation required.
- Provide guidelines for the ASEAN wide recognition or accreditation process.
- Expedite the process of assessment for recognition.
